PURERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO

Puerto Vallarta is a major Mexican cruise port city located on Bahia de Banderas (Mexico's biggest natural bay), featuring over 100 mi (160 km) of mountains-encircled coastline. The city has population of around 260,000 (metro 390,000).

The settlement was established in 1851 under the name Las Penas. In 1918, the agricultural town was renamed "Puerto Vallarta" to honor a former governor (Ignacio L.Vallarta). Sierras mountains kept the town fairly isolated. In 1954 started a regularly scheduled air service. The road from Tepic was paved in 1970, opening the way for tourism.

City's tourism has steadily increased over the years and currently makes up to 1/2 of the local economic activity. International travel tourism's peak season runs from late-November through March. Puerto Vallarta beaches are among best-known tourist attractions. Long stretches of beaches are located to the north and a series of coves - to the south. The city itself is relatively big but has never lost its colonial charm and Mexican flavour - cobbled streets running up and down among the red-tile-roofed houses.

MAZATLAN

mazatlan-zona-dorada.jpg

Mazatlán (Spanish pronunciation: [masaˈtlan] (listen)) is a city in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. The city serves as the municipal seat for the surrounding municipio, known as the Mazatlán Municipality. It is located at 23°13′N 106°25′W on the Pacific coast, across from the southernmost tip of the Baja California Peninsula.

Mazatlán is a Nahuatl word meaning "place of deer". The city was founded in 1531 by an army of Spaniards and indigenous people. By the mid-19th century, a large group of immigrants arrived from Germany. Over time, Mazatlán developed into a commercial seaport, importing equipment for the nearby gold and silver mines. It served as the capital of Sinaloa from 1859 to 1873. The German settlers also influenced the local music, banda, with some genres being an alteration of Bavarian folk music. The settlers also established the Pacifico Brewery on March 14, 1900. Mazatlán has a rich culture and art community. In addition to the Angela Peralta Theater, Mazatlán has many galleries and artist's studios. Mazatlán's art museum, the Museo del Arte, exhibits both Mexican and international artists.

With a population of 438,434 (city) and 489,987 (municipality) as of the 2010 census, Mazatlán is the second-largest city in the state. It is also a tourist destination, with its beaches lined with resort hotels. A car ferry crosses the Gulf of California, from Mazatlán to La Paz, Baja California Sur. The municipality has a land area of 3,068.48 km² (1,184.75 sq mi) and includes smaller outlying communities such as Villa Unión, La Noria, El Quelite, and El Habal. Mazatlán is served by General Rafael Buelna International Airport.

Until the early 19th century, Mazatlán was a collection of huts inhabited by indigenous people whose major occupation was fishing, according to Abel Aubert du Petit-Thouars, a French explorer. In 1829, a Filipino banker named Juan Nepomuceno Machado arrived and established commercial relations with vessels coming to Mazatlán from far off places such as Chile, Peru, the United States, Europe, and Asia Pacific. By 1836, the city had a population of between 4,000 and 5,000. It subsequently became the largest port on the Mexican Pacific coast.[citation needed]

In 1846 during the Mexican-American war, Mazatlán was invaded and occupied by the U.S. military as part of the U.S. Pacific Coast campaign. In 1859, the port was blockaded by Captain Sidney Grenfell of the British steamship H.M.S. Amethyst.[3] On November 13, 1864, the French Army and the Imperialist forces took possession of Mazatlán, until they were deported on November 13, 1866, by General Ramón Corona's forces. After customs officials seized twenty-three ounces of gold from the British warship Chanticleer on June 18, 1868, which at the time was blockading the port, its captain, William H. Bridge, threatened to bomb the city on November 22.

During the California Gold Rush, fortune hunters from the United States' East Coast sailed from New York Harbor and other Atlantic ports to Mexican ports in the Gulf of Mexico. After landing, the aspiring miners travelled over land for weeks to Mazatlán, where they would embark from the port to arrive in San Francisco in another four to five weeks.

When Félix Zuloaga Tacubaya proclaimed the Plan of Ignoring the Constitution of 1857, the garrison of the Plaza de Mazatlán did not remain outside this proclamation, and on the first of January, 1858, the Plan of Mazatlán was proclaimed, which followed Zuloaga's Plan.

The capital of Sinaloa, until the year 1853, had been Culiacán. However that year, the capital was transferred to Mazatlán. On July 22, 1867, the federal government passed a law that forbade state capitals from also acting as ports. As a result of this law, on September 20, 1873, the State Legislature decreed that Culiacán would be the state capital again.

The Siglo XIX constitution of 1852 decreed a new internal division in Sinaloa, which reduced it to nine districts by removing San Ignacio, which had been annexed to the Cosalá, and Choix, which had been annexed to El Fuerte. It also amended the name of the district from Villa de la Union to the port of Mazatlán. That same constitution also decreed the headquarters and council facility policies in each district.

In 1861, the political headquarters were removed and turned into prefectures,

and the same year the State Legislature adopted the Act on Municipalities. 1868, the district had five municipalities in Mazatlán; one in the center and the other four  in Villa Union, Siqueiros, La Noria, and The Milk-weed. On the morning  of November 13, 1864, French  Navy ships fired 12 cannon shots into the  city, causing minor

The Mazatlán Times was

The first issue appeared on

May 12, 1863. The publisher

boasted that his was the only

newspaper, not only in Mazatlán and Sinaloa, but throughout Mexico.

In 1873, according to the census of the State, the District of Mazatlán was reduced to three municipalities: Mazatlán, Villa Union, and La Noria. Siqueiros had been annexed in 1870 to the central municipality, and The Milkweed to La Noria.

CABO SAN LUCAS

During the colonial time, sailors knew the coast of Baja California very well. Galleons loaded with silks, pearls and spices, which traveled between Manila and Acapulco stored up on water and food supplies – hunting wild animals – at an estuary, next to the mouth of a river, close by a place, which now is San Jose del Cabo.

They then continued their trip until Acapulco, where the load was sent to Mexico City and from there to Veracruz, where it was finally embarked, heading to Spain.
Since Francisco de Ulloa discovered it in 1537, Cabo San Lucas was a point of nautical reference. Nevertheless, when pirates found out about it, it became a closely watched point by both parties, and in 1730, the government of New Spain ordered Father Nicholas Tamaral to found a fort and a Jesuit mission in San Jose.

In 1846, San Jose was occupied by the North American army during that country’s invasion of Mexico. The main square celebrates the Officer Jose Antonio Mijares who beat them and drove them out. That is why the square bears his name.
The fame of the wealth of its waters grew and in 1919, it attracted a seafood packaging company to CSL, which at one time was the third largest of its kind in the world. However, it took tourism fame a few more decades before it came.

After the Second World War, some sports veterans discovered Marlins, weighing 220 kilos (485 pounds) which even nowadays still inhabit the waters of the Sea of Cortez. This started an unprecedented tourist exodus. People mainly came to hunt and to fish, and in the Fifties, the first luxury hotels began to substitute the simple palapas (palm-thatched huts).

In the Sixties and Seventies, the news that the most exclusive vacation refuge for the rich and famous was located some 1500 kilometers (930 miles) south of Hollywood, spread like a wildfire.

The place then saw an invasion of celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Sophia Loren, Mick Jagger, Elton John, and John Wayne.

The present trans-peninsular highway was inaugurated in the Seventies. California surfers and those people who fled the cold winter in the north began to invade the beaches. However, it was not until 1984, when FONATUR took charge of the area’s development, that the first airport was opened.

After that event, huge hotel chains became interested in opening the doors to progress.

Since 1990 “Cabos” witnessed a triplication of the population in San Jose and Cabo San Lucas and also observed a vertiginous growth of the tourist market, while more than 3.000 private residences for foreign vacationers and pensioners began to be constructed.
